Inspired by the first Tomb Raider videogame, originally released in 1996, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a totally new 2006 adventure for Lara, faithfully preserving the elements which made the original Tomb Raider such a classic, selling over 7 million copies worldwide. Using an enhanced 'Tomb Raider Legend' game engine, the graphics, technology and physics bring Lara's adventure and pursuit of a mystical artefact known only as the Scion right up to today's technology standards and will offer gamers a completely new gameplay experience.

"We are re-telling an incredible story using today's technology, we've taken all of the key moments from the original game and put them into the context of a brand new Tomb Raider adventure."

The puzzles are now more in depth and incorporate environmental interaction and physics driven solutions. The level design and flow of gameplay are inspired by the original videogame making Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary a brand new experience in gaming, while still invoking the nostalgia of the first adventure in Tomb Raiding.

"We've captured the essence of what made the original game so special and with today's technology, created a game that pushes the boundaries of the current gaming consoles. Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a special celebration of Lara's reign as videogaming's leading lady," said Ian Livingstone, Eidos Interactive.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary is currently in development by Crystal Dynamics and will be available in spring 2007.

TOMB RAIDER ANNIVERSARY FIRST LOOK

Play magazine have been given opportunity to paw over the latest Lara Croft adventure, Tomb Raider Anniversary, courtesy of publisher Eidos plc and an article in this month's issue offers a first taste of what fans can expect from a special game to mark the tenth anniversary of subterranean explorations.

"Tomb Raider Anniversary is inspired by Lara's inaugural adventure, but all new assets have been tapped to create a game that is as new as it is faithful. Some of the larger set pieces that worked like a charm are being embellished for much grander scope and scale.

"New paths are being added to open the world up, providing a denser, more challenging mode of adventure. Puzzles you remember, like the simple cog in the wheel, are being turned into tasks that require more steps and points of logical approach.

Play also comment on the Tomb Raider Legend engine being mobilised for Anniversary. "Thanks to the Tomb Raider Legend engine, this game looks incredible, with the sense of isolation that dominated the original experience being keyed in on."

Tomb Raider Anniversary
For her 10th Birthday the maker of Tomb Raider Legend send Lara through her first part of her famous series. Only a remake? No! Here is quite more than super looks.
What for a year! Not 2006, because December is still left for a complete review. No, let's look a decade back - to the year 1996, in which happend a memorable moment: For example the young animation studio Pixar broke every visitor records with "Toy Story", the first film, which were complety made by computers. As the last EU-Country Belgium got rid of the death penalty and the german soccer team won the European championship againgst the Czech Republic with 2:1. But what the games of videogames is most momorable, is the birth of a pixellady named Lara Croft. Now, ten years later the development team, who helped the clever archeologist to get her former glory with "Tomb Raider: Legend", accord respect with her former debut: Tomb Raider: Anniversary is the remake of the first part in a modern look - and more. We visited the publisher Eidos in London to find out more about Lara's newest old adventure - and to light some birthday candles of course.

About Lara and King Kong
Right at the beginning Toby Guard corrected a big rumor: "No, Tomb Raider Anniversary is no 1:1 remake of the original one. Instead we were inspirierd by Peter Jackson, who made his remake of King Kong very succesfull: To take over highlights from the original part with a modern look." So, the team didn't build the original Tomb Raider stone for stone again, but provide the "new" game with remarkable single scenes from once. Is there a fan that doesn't remember the wooden cogwheel device and the waterfall in the Peruvian temple ruins? Or the T-Rex' scary and spectacular entrance? Unfortunately, Toby absolutely refused to show us the latter. Instead, we see Lara in another cutscene, standing at the bottom of a postcard compatible valley, staring at the camera in horror and barely able to stand due to quake-inducing footsteps (Jurassic Park, anyone?). The presentation stops right before the primeval animal appears. "Come on, gotta have a little suspense left", Toby jokes. Well, he's got it.

New Fitness Program
Even though Lara's arsenal of moves was revolutionary in the original Tomb Raider game, her jumping and crawling looks quite clumsy by today's standards. Remember long jumps, for example? Those worked more or less like this: Carefully walk up to the edge, hop back a full step, get some momentum, jump at the right moment and don't you forget that button to hang on! The programmers at Crystal Dynamics have adopted Lara's modernized abilities from Legend. You'll be able to reach far ledges even if you don't jump right at the very last moment. However, you'll have to grab again by hitting a key or your heroine will slip and fall. In general, you'll remember a lot of the jumping and climbing from Legend: Lara dives horizontally from ledge to ledge, swings on all kinds of bars and even hurls herself up to ledges above her. Of course the helpful grapple will return, which Lara uses to swing across chasms and to pull metallic objects towards herself. But Miss Croft has also learnt some new moves and balances on scarily narrow wooden poles – gamers using a gamepad with an analog stick will have a clear advantage.

Tell Me Again!
For those who can't remember: In the original Tomb Raider, Lara was hired by a mysterious organization to dig for a magical artefact called the Scion in the Peruvian mountains. As soon as Lara's found all of the three parts of the treasure, power-hungry Jacqueline Natla takes it from her and tries to kill her. Lara escapes and climbs, puzzles and shoots from now an through Greek and Egypt till Atlantis to get the Scion back. But honest, didn't you still know that? No? Well, we didn't. "I admit, we didn't tell the story well", Toby Gard confesses. "We want to make that better now." Like Tomb Raider: Legend there will be many cutscenes in the game's engine. But they weren't finish at the presentation. We assume that the cutscenes will be as stylish and furious as in Legend.

Like 10 years ago!
New movements, new level design, new graphic – will there still be left the original charm? "Of course", Toby answers. "For example Lara fights in Peru against many bats, wolves and bears. These has been the most type of enemies in Tomb Raider. But the team built in more nostaglia and they even rummaged from the design drawer the rotating ring menu and the same inventory from former days. Crystal Dynamics especially pays attention to take over the great atmosphere from the original Tomb Raider to Anniversary. "Lara's fans especially loved her isolation in the first part", Toby explains. "She was totally alone down there with all these enemies and had to explore old ruins by herself." To reach this oppressed atmosphere, the designers sent Lara's colleagues, who gave her hints over the headset and occasionally makes jokes, into virutal retirement. From which Lara is far away. Even 10 years later the pixellady from former days jumps as fresh and charming through her exciting adventures like then that some modern action hero could get anxiety.

The Original
Tomb Raider was published in November 1996 and revolutionized the genre of 3D action games. The brilliant mix of shooting, tricky puzzles and more tricky leaps as well as the smart and attractive female hero caused excitement all over the world. Tomb Raider were sold at millions as PC version as well as for Playstation and it has seven parts until now. Mid November the developer Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider: Legend) confirmed their work on the 8th part.

The new "real" Lara Croft
Six months ago when the newest part of Tomb Raider were published the Brand Manager Matt Gorman introduced Karima Adebibe (known from the movie Alien vs. Predator) the new and sixth Lara-Model. For the next two years the 21 year old Englishwoman represents Tomb Raider at game conventions and TV spots. To get prepared for her role, Karima absolved a recruit training at the SAS, the Anti-Terror-Unity at the british army and a hand-to-hand combat training and weapon training. "That is quite the greatest challenge to me as a model and actor and I want to hold it with both hands.

- В игре Лара будет одна, без Зипа и Алистера, т.е. head set убрали;
- по сравнению с оригиналом будет больше кат-сцен, объясняющих ход сюжета;
- магнитным крюком можно будет "хвататься" за деревянные выступы;
- в игре будут старые враги : летучие мыши, волки, рапторы...;
- останется классическое меню
- игра готова на 90%

Some experiments are self-explanatory: you need someone from your close circle, just anyone, but in any case not someone who might be an hardcore gamer. Show him a picture of Lara Croft, the main character from the Tomb Raider series, and for example the picture on the cover of this magazine. There's a strong possibility that he will know what this is about, without having played the game ever.

This character created in 1996 is indeed one the only video games celebrities, one of the only numeric creation that has surpassed its pixel condition to become an important element of popular culture. For 10 years, Lara Croft has been used at every opportunity. From comic books to advertisment, including of course movies, she was everywhere, even succeeding in making people forget the downward trend in quality the games of the series have been on.

But last year, the series has ben propelled forward again with the revival episode, the excellent "Legend". With a new development team, a new look and a new gameplay, Tomb Raider was back on track.

And yet the next episode in the series won't be completely new, anyway not really original.
Indeed, for the 10th birthday of the most popular treasure hunter, Crystal Dynamics is openly celebrating their heroine. The result is Tomb Raider Anniversary.

Hopefully, this new version won't be a carbon-copy. To copy the very same game , even with a 2006 technology, would not have been of any use. This remake will indeed be a new game with enough changes and surprises not to frustate those who played the original game. Now the aim is really nostalgic, to pay an hommage to the myth instead of producing a dull carbon-copy.

Page 2 :

This return to the roots brings back the structure and the levels of the original game, adapting them with a modern gameplay and the Tomb Raider Legend engine. You'll find back the first mythic adventures of the heroine in peru, Greece, Egypt, and finally in the lost City of Atlantis. For now, neither Eidos nor Crystal Dynamics have said if the game will include the additional levels. Nevertheless, there will plenty of things to do, the entire game being redesigned. First, the levels are larger and more complex than in the original.

This can be evident, but the graphics evolution is the most obvious. Within these ten years, there has been so much progress in this field. The levels are highly detailed, with very refine and realistic textures. There are many lights effetcs which give a very particular atmosphere, almost oppressing, in those sanctuaries reached by Lara for the first time in centuries. Crystal Dynamics has done everything to give the impression that Lara is all alone in those lost places and that she can't count on anything but herself. A pool or a corridor which were rectangular in the 90's can now have a more sophisticated shape : the corridor won't be straight, the pool will have more angles and won't be similar to an olympic pool anymore.

Modern machines memory is highly superior than those from the 90's, so now the gigantism is real. Everyhting is bigger, higher and rougher.

While increasing the number of polygons, the developpers also made the design evolve : walls aren't straight anymore, and you can see useful cracks for Lara to grip. Stages are higher, so climbing and jumping is quite spectacular.

Moreover, the Lara from today has not much in common with her model from 1996 anymore. The shorts and the 2 guns are still there, but for the rest the polygons have been multiplied. More mature than in "Legend", our adventurer is sexier than ever, without resorting to the mammary exagerations from her past adventures.
Above all, she moves really easily and with an almost feline grace. Jumps calculated to the milimetre and head-bangings in walls won't be part of this hommage. Her set of movements is really huge and has real gameplay applications. For example, she can catch hold of something to save herself after a fall, which allows her to perform more acrobatics without having to start from the beginning if she falls. New moves that weren't even in Legend have appeared : Lara can now balance on tiptoe on very narrow surfaces, and this was immediatly tested in a funambulist sequence on top of posts that were several meters high.
In order to remain faithfull to the original game, Lara has lost some of her "Legend" moves. Thus, no more driving or magnetic grapple. The nostagic version of Miss Croft is now on foot, uses a basic grapple, and has nothing but her basic weapons: the 2 guns, the shotgun, and the double-uzis.

One of the big differences with the original game is also linked with the introduction of a physic engine. Lara can now activate various mecanisms with her own weight or by putting certain objects on them. For example, a wooden bridge that collapses after she walks on it can later be used as a ladder to climb on top of the opposite side. Also, while hanging with her grapple, she can put pressure on a stone that will open a secret passage.

As a whole, Anniversary wants to be more dificult than Lara's recent adventures. The first Tomb Raider was quite a ride, and so will be Anniversary. As the heroine is more easier to control than in the original, the complexity comes more from the reflexion. You now have to really look around, to find the right way. On the screen, no clue or sparkling thing to show the way, you have to think. Reflexes are almost less important than mind, which is the philosophy that the developpers want to give to Lara. Levels are sometimes less linear, and give several ways to progress. If you feel you have the ability and the talent of an acrobat, you will always be able to go through, but it won't be as easy as the "way of the mind".

Nevertheless, Anniversary isn't all about reflexion. Fighting has still an important place. Tomb Raider 1 gave place to some unpleasant meetings between Lara and dangerous beasts. As Crystal Dynamics improved the AI of the human ennemies in Legend, the studio created very realistic animals. In Anniversary, Lara mostly fights hostile beasts. Wolves, bats, bears, raptors, and the mythical T-Rex, no one is missing. They are more dangerous than in our memories, having real strategy and using their skills the best they can. For example, bats are nimbler, and raptors run around Lara before jumping at her to eat her. To find her way out, she has no choice but to use the environment and her athletic skills.

Page 5 :

For all we've seen of that game, the Tomb Raider formula is working fine again. Ten years of disapointing sequels and loud publicity are quickly forgotten. This edition of Tomb Raider Anniversary seems to provide the same sensations than its ancester. More than a tribute, it is almost an explanation of the whole franchise, or at least a rebuilding episode. Besides, the scenario will be more developped than in TR1. Seeing Lara moving on the screen is a thing, knowing why she moves is far more better. Thanks to the return of Lara's father, Toby Gard, who came to assist Crystal Dynamics, the story will be better told, and Lara's "mythology" will be further explained. Plus, the mansion could be back in a revised version. In the original, it was only a training level; here, there will be real purposes to achieve.

Now, the question stays what is coming for Tomb Raider in the next years. After blowing the candles, no doubt that we will still hear about Lara. Her birthday present seems promissing, and new adventures are already on the road. And who knows, it could be for the next ten years ?

Important points

- Eidos didn't say if Unfinished Business will be included
- When she walk on unstable surfaces, you have to maintain her balance
- The grapple is NOT magnetic
- No vehicles
- The environments are much more interactive : she can use them for lots of things, pick up a piece of wood on the ground and use it as a ladder
- The only weapons are pistols, shootgun and... UZIS
- Puzzles are more complicated. There is no clue or sparkling thing to show you where to go.
- There is more than one way to explore the environments and complete a level. You can choose the acrobatic way, or the easier way...
- Fighting ennemies is still an important part of the game : the beast are much more realistic and their AI has really been improved. They are more dangerous than before, they develop a real strategy to kill you. For example the raptors run around Lara in circles until they are enough to jump at her...
And last but not least :
- This isn't 100% sure, but Croft Mansion could be back, and not only as a training level but with real purposes to achieve.

- Пока ещё не известно на 100%, но скорей всего Особняк Лары будет присутствовоть в игре, и не только как учебный уровень, но и с достижением реальных целей.
